The Proposed Project - into air, into thin air for wind ensemble and electronics

The piece will be a grade 5 work in three movements and roughly 12-15 minutes in length for wind ensemble and electronics. Derek will be basing the piece around the idea of loss. There will be two options for the electronics part: a pre-recorded track or a unique, live electronics part utilizing members of the audience. Prior to the performance, audience members will have the opportunity to say and record the names of loved ones they wish to be mentioned. These recordings will then be integrated into the electronics part.

Having lost his last two remaining grandparents in relatively quick succession, Derek has been wanting to write a piece to which everyone can relate. As he states: the loss of a loved one is an extremely personal and yet a fundamental human event that unites all of us. Derek's piece will be titled
into air, into thin air (from Shakespeare's The Tempest) and the titles of the three movements are fragments of various quotes pertaining to loss: a hole in the world, clouds of melancholia, and of unspeakable love.

The instrumentation will not exceed: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 alto saxes., tenor sax., baritone sax., 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, 2 tubas, piano, string bass, 5 percussion, plus electronics (parts for B-flat contrabass clarinet, E-flat contralto clarinet, and bass saxophone will be provided if there is no contrabassoon available).

The consortium fee will be $500, requested by May 1, 2018. Wichita State University will premiere the work during the 2018-2019 school year, which will be followed by one year of exclusivity for all consortium members.
